On Tuesday, Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani inaugurated the Erbil-Gomaspan road with the aim to ease traffic and support tourism.
“Beyond easing traffic for local residents, it will help elevate tourism and have a direct impact on trade and the continuous development around Erbil,” Prime Minister Barzani posted on X.
In his opening speech, Prime Minister Barzani said that the project has been designed with public safety in mind.
“Undoubtedly, it will make travel safer for everyone. We have all used this route before. I remember that in the past, traveling between Erbil and the surrounding areas could be quite dangerous. Now, with a road built to this standard, people can reach their preferred destinations more quickly, and residents of the outskirts can access Erbil more easily for their work. This project will enhance connectivity between cities and towns across Kurdistan.”

Moreover, he added that this road now links Erbil to Smaquli and the roads leading toward Koy Sanjaq and Sulaymaniyah. “In the future, the route will continue via Bastora, providing yet another connection to Erbil.”
“There are many tourist sites in this area, some of which have already been developed, especially the newly built Gomaspan Dam and the recreational road around it. This will make access much easier for visitors from Erbil and across Kurdistan. With the arrival of spring – which we hope will be a pleasant one – people will be able to enjoy the beautiful nature of Kurdistan,” he concluded.
