Kurdistan Region President Welcomes New Steps in Turkey’s Peace Process

On Wednesday, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani underlined his support for the peace process between the Turkish government and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), and commented on a recent report of the National Solidarity, Brotherhood and Democracy Commission.

“I welcome the report of the National Solidarity, Brotherhood and Democracy Committee in the Parliament of Türkiye and regard it as a meaningful step forward on the path toward peace and resolution. Advancing the language of politics, dialogue, and a commitment to peaceful solutions are foundational principles for building the lasting stability that our entire region deserves,” he posted in Turkish on X.

Last week, Turkey’s parliament adopted the report by the National Solidarity, Brotherhood and Democracy Commission. According to Turkish state media outlet Daily Sabah, the 60-page report includes recommendations for future legislative steps to facilitate the process, including adopting European standards for Turkish legislation.

“We in the Kurdistan Region have always stood ready to support and cooperate with any effort aimed at resolving outstanding issues peacefully and opening a new chapter of brotherhood and coexistence. We hope that further steps will follow in parliament, steps that deepen mutual trust and bring closer the peace that so many people are waiting for,” President Nechirvan Barzani added.

On Wednesday, Aysegul Dogan, spokesperson of the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party, welcomed the report, but underlined that a single  report or commission cannot solve the 100-year-old problem on its own.

In October 2024, Devlet Bahceli, leader of the far-right Nationalist Movement Party, called on imprisoned PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan to address Turkey’s parliament and declare the end of the armed struggle of the PKK, which was the start of a new peace process.

In May last year, the PKK decided to disband and disarm, following a call from Ocalan in February for the group to lay down their arms. In mid-November last year, the PKK withdrew forces from the Zap region in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, and in October, it withdrew its last fighters from inside Turkey.

The Kurdistan Region has strongly supported the peace process. “We fully support this peace process, and whatever is required from us, we are ready,” President Masoud Barzani said at the Melaye Ciziri Symposium in the province of Sirnak in southeast Turkey in November last year.
