KRG Not Part of Plan to Arm Iranian Kurds: Spokesperson

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) spokesperson Peshawa Hawramani on Thursday denied allegations that Iraqi Kurds are part of a plan to arm Iranian Kurdish opposition parties.

“Reports that speak about the role of the Kurdistan Region and the allegations claiming that we are part of a plan to arm and send Kurdish opposition parties into Iranian territory are completely unfounded. We categorically deny them and affirm that they are being published deliberately and maliciously,” he posted on X.

“At the same time, the KRG and the political parties within it are not part of any campaign to expand the war and tensions in the region,” he added.

The official said the KRG’s policy is for peace and stability. “We strongly condemn the cowardly attacks targeting the Kurdistan Region, and we call on the federal government and the international community to intervene to stop these assaults and protect our land, our people, and our region.”

Since the beginning of the conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran on Saturday, there has been an increase in drone and missile attacks on the Kurdistan Region, as well as reports that Iranian Kurdish opposition parties may join the war.

A Fox news reporter on Wednesday claimed that a US official told her that thousands of Iraqi Kurds have launched a ground offensive in Iran.

Immediately, Aziz Ahmad, Deputy Chief of Staff to the KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, denied the claim in a post on X. “Not a single Iraqi Kurd has crossed the border. This is patently false.”

In a post on X on Thursday, Kurdistan Democratic Party senior politburo member Hemin Hawrami underlined that international media reports that Iraqi Kurds are arming and supporting Iranian Kurdish opposition groups to cross into Iran for an armed struggle “is incorrect and false.”

“We are not a part of this war and our goal is to maintain peace and security of our region and beyond. In the meantime, we condemn these unjustifiable attacks on Kurdistan and call on the international community to help us and stop this aggression and protect our region.”
