Dana Gas Suspends Production Amid Power Cuts in Kurdistan

UAE-based energy company Dana Gas on Wednesday announced that it had temporarily suspended production operations at the Khor Mor gas field amid ongoing attacks by Iran and Iranian-backed armed groups.

The company said this was done in coordination with the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Ministries of Natural Resources and Electricity as a precautionary measure due to the ongoing regional security situation.

On February 28, the KRG announced that the power supply had dropped to 2,500 and 3,000 megawatts after operations were suspended, leading to electricity outages in the Kurdistan Region.

However, the company said that the Khor Mor plant is being purged and kept in an operational condition to ensure that it can be brought back online in an optimum manner as and when appropriate.

Last year on November 26, the Khor Mor gas field was hit by drones, shutting down production and affecting the power supply in the Kurdistan Region, which is dependent on gas.Yesterday, Iraq’s national electricity network witnessed a widespread shutdown.

“Our region is passing through a very complex and sensitive situation,” KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani said earlier this week.

“We hope that all the problems and disputes in the region will be resolved peacefully. For our part, we will do everything we can to ensure that Kurdistan remains protected and kept away from war, suffering, and instability.”
