KRG Prime Minister Says Groups Attacking Kurdistan Funded by Baghdad

On Sunday, President Masoud Barzani and Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Prime Minister Masrour Barzani attended the condolence ceremony for Welat Tahir, a security officer who was killed in last night’s attack on Erbil International Airport.

Talking to reporters, Prime Minister Barzani “called on the federal government and parliament to take a clear position and set limits on these criminals, noting that, unfortunately, the groups carrying out such attacks are funded by the Baghdad government and are provided with salaries and weapons.”

He underlined that the Kurdistan Region has never been and will never be a source of threat to any neighboring country, amid unconfirmed rumors that the KRG would support Iranian Kurdish groups to attack Iran. KRG officials have repeatedly denied the truth of the rumor.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Barzani said “that under no circumstances can the continuation of these attacks be accepted, nor can the blood of our martyrs be wasted.” He stressed that the Kurdistan Region is making every effort to keep Kurdistan away from war and turmoil, but as President Masoud Barzani has said, “everything has a limit.”

He expressed hope that the federal government will draw a clear line for the perpetrators and stop supporting them.“I assure you that the blood of the martyr Welat and the other martyrs will not go in vain, and we call on the federal government and the (Iraqi) Council of Representatives to set a legal limit for these groups,” President Masoud Barzani told reporters.

In an earlier statement today, President Barzani also said that “everyone must understand that restraint has its limits. The Peshmerga have never – and will never – accept oppression or aggression from any side. These hostile acts, and the undermining of Kurdistan’s security and stability by those groups, cannot and must not continue.”

Prime Minister Barzani added that he has been contacted by world leaders, all expressing their support for the Kurdistan Region, and that mutual support is needed to restore peace.

On Saturday, Iraqi parliamentarians from the Kata’ib Hezbollah faction chanted “Death to America” in the Iraqi parliament.

“Their armed wing – criminals who fire drones and rockets at civilian, military, and energy infrastructure across the Kurdistan Region – is on the Iraqi government payroll,” Aziz Ahmad, Deputy Chief of Staff to Prime Minister Barzani posted on X.
