UAE, KRG Condemn Drone Attack on UAE Consulate in Erbil

In a statement on Tuesday, the UAE strongly condemned and denounced the “unprovoked terrorist drone attack” that targeted the Consulate General of the UAE in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, which resulted in material damage with no injuries reported.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) stressed that targeting diplomatic missions and premises constitutes a flagrant violation of international norms and laws, particularly the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which guarantees the inviolability of diplomatic premises and the protection of diplomatic personnel,” the statement said.

“Such acts represent a dangerous escalation and a threat to regional security and stability.”

The UAE has called on the Federal Government of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to investigate the circumstances surrounding this attack, identify those responsible, and take all necessary measures to ensure that the perpetrators are held accountable.

The MoFA also reiterated the UAE’s firm rejection of such attacks aimed at undermining security and stability, emphasizing the necessity of protecting diplomatic premises, missions, and their personnel in accordance with international laws and norms.

On Tuesday, the KRG Department of Foreign Relations also strongly condemned “the illegitimate attacks targeting civilians and civilian institutions, as well as the targeting of diplomatic missions, which constitute a clear violation of international laws.”

“This comes at a time when the Kurdistan Region is not a party to this war and has always supported peace, stability, and coexistence in the region,” the KRG said.

“The Iraqi government must assume responsibility for protecting Iraq’s sovereignty and prevent those extremist and outlaw groups inside Iraq that, without justification, continue to target the Kurdistan Region.”

On Tuesday,  Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also strongly condemned the targeting of the UAE's Consulate General in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

According to a statement from the KRG Counter-Terrorism Service, on Monday night, March 9, 2026, at 22:24, coalition forces shot down three bomb-laden drones in the skies over Erbil.

The Counter-Terrorism Service said that debris from one of the destroyed drones fell near the UAE Consulate, but fortunately no casualties were reported.

Since the conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran began on February 28, several attacks have been carried out on U.S. bases in Erbil and Baghdad, Peshmerga forces, as well as on oil facilities in both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and members of Iranian Kurdish opposition parties.

According to a report of Community Peacemaker Teams - Iraqi Kurdistan published on March 8, 196 attacks by suicide drones and bombardments by ballistic missiles and rockets have targeted the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, in which a total of four persons were killed and 19 were injured.
