MoPA Calls On Baghdad to Stop Attacks on Peshmerga

In a statement on Monday, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs (MoPA) said that on Sunday, the Peshmerga headquarters in the Kurdistan Region was targeted by outlawed groups with four drones, and underlined that the MoPA might have to take action if Baghdad does not stop the attacks.

“This attack is a continuation of a series of systematic terrorist attacks that have targeted various areas of the region in recent days,” the MoPA said.

“These attacks are being carried out openly, in full view of the Iraqi army and security forces, targeting the Kurdistan Region and the Peshmerga forces headquarters, resulting in loss of life and significant material damage.”

The MoPA also said that to date, no serious stance or practical steps have been taken by the Iraqi federal government “to deter these terrorist attacks and put a definitive end to them.

“As is well known, the Peshmerga forces are part of the defense and security system and have always been a bulwark for the protection of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq as a whole. Therefore, stopping these attacks and holding the perpetrators accountable has become an urgent security necessity that cannot be postponed under any circumstances,” the MoPA underlined.

“We have always prioritized the interests of the Iraqi people and the people of Kurdistan, and we have acted with utmost restraint and responsibility despite this deteriorating situation,” the MoPA added. “However, we clearly state that if the federal government continues its silence and its institutions remain inactive, we will be forced to take a different stance.”

On Sunday, KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani strongly condemned recent attacks by militia groups on the Kurdistan Region.

“I strongly condemn the heinous attacks by terrorist militias targeting the U.S. Consulate General and civilian areas in Erbil. These deliberate acts of aggression pose a grave threat to the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and the wider region. This is unacceptable,” Prime Minister Barzani said.

“I once again call unequivocally upon the federal government in Baghdad to take immediate, decisive, and tangible actions against these outlaw armed groups and militias. It is incumbent upon the federal government to use all means to thwart these terrorist attacks and bring those responsible to justice.”

On Sunday, the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s (KDP) Foreign Relations Office stated that the Kurdistan Region, particularly its capital, is currently under heavy drone attack by the so-called “Islamic Resistance.”

“These groups are part of the Hashd al-Shaabi [Popular Mobilization Forces], which is formally integrated into Iraq’s security institutions. Regrettably, Iraq is increasingly resembling a failed state, unable to control the forces it supports and funds,” the KDP said.
