On Thursday, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau summoned Iraqi Ambassador Nizar Khirullah in Washington, D.C., to express the U.S. government’s strong condemnation of attacks on U.S. diplomatic facilities, including attacks on the Kurdistan Region and the April 8 ambush of U.S. diplomats in Baghdad.
“These attacks come after hundreds in recent weeks against U.S. citizens, diplomatic facilities, and commercial interests, as well as Iraq’s neighbors and Iraqi institutions and civilians, including in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region,” the U.S. State Department readout said.
“While acknowledging the efforts of Iraqi Security Forces to respond to these terrorist attacks, the Deputy Secretary emphasized the Iraqi government’s failure to prevent these attacks while some elements associated with the Iraqi government continue to actively provide political, financial, and operational cover for the militias adversely impacts the U.S.-Iraq relationship.
“The Deputy Secretary stressed the United States will not tolerate attacks on U.S. interests and expects the Iraqi government to immediately take all measures to dismantle the Iran-aligned militia groups in Iraq.”
On April 8, the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad posted on X that “Iran-aligned Iraqi terrorist militias conducted several drone attacks near the Diplomatic Support Center and Baghdad International Airport.” This comes despite a two-week ceasefire announced that morning.
Since the regional conflict began on February 28, the total casualties resulting from 600 attacks by Iran and Iranian-backed groups on the Kurdistan Region has risen to at least 17 people killed and dozens injured.
On Friday, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Ministry of Interior said “several drone attacks targeted multiple locations across the Kurdistan Region on the night of Thursday, April 9, 2026, even after a ceasefire had been declared in the region.”

“Unfortunately, up to now, the Iraqi government has taken no real steps to prevent these attacks targeting the Kurdistan Region,” KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani told reporters on Tuesday, after attending the funeral ceremony for a couple that was killed in an Iranian drone strike.
“In truth, there is no justification for these attacks on the Kurdistan Region. We have spoken with the Iranian side, conveyed our complaints, and made clear that the Kurdistan Region is not part of this conflict. We pose no threat to any side.”
