Kurdistan Region’s Largest Gas Field Resumes Operations

UAE-based energy company Dana Gas announced on Monday that it had resumed production at the Khor Mor gas facility after halting natural gas exports to Kurdish power generation plants for nearly 40 days due to security threats.

The company said that it has “carried out prudent operational procedures throughout this period, in close coordination with government authorities, while prioritizing the safety of personnel and assets.”

Kurdish media outlets earlier reported that the field had resumed production, but it was not officially confirmed yet by Dana Gas.

On February 28, Dana Gas announced that it had temporarily suspended production operations at the Khor Mor gas field amid ongoing attacks by Iran and Iranian-backed armed groups after the United States and Israel launched an attack on Iran.

The company said this was done in coordination with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Ministries of Natural Resources and Electricity as a precautionary measure.

As a result, power supply dropped to 2,500 and 3,000 megawatts after operations were suspended, leading to electricity outages in the Kurdistan Region.

However, the company said at the time that the Khor Mor plant was being purged and kept in an operational condition to ensure that it could be brought back online in an optimum manner as and when appropriate.

On April 8, the United States and Iran agreed to a regional two-week ceasefire after 40 days of conflict, which also saw a number of attacks by Iranian-backed Iraqi militia groups on oil fields, including in the Kurdistan Region.

Furthermore, several drone attacks targeted multiple locations across the Kurdistan Region on April 9, despite the ceasefire and repeated calls for a lasting peace from Kurdish officials.

The Khor Mor gas field has faced previous attacks. On November 26, 2025, the Khor Mor gas field was hit by drones, shutting down production and affecting the power supply in the Kurdistan Region, which is dependent on gas.

In 2007, via the Kurdistan Gas Project, Dana Gas and Crescent Petroleum entered into an agreement with the KRG to develop, produce, and sell from the field, enabling the government to secure stable and affordable gas supply for regional power generation.

Initially, the Khor Mor plant produced around 300 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscf/d). However, by March 2025, the field had a daily production output of 525 MMscf/d due to improvements in the operations.
