Two Drones Intercepted in Kurdistan: Statement
Two Drones Intercepted in Kurdistan: Statement

The Kurdistan Region Counter-Terrorism Unit (CTU) on Tuesday said that two Iranian drones flying towards Erbil province were shot down by fighter jets.

“According to information from the Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Unit (CTU), today at 17:04, two bomb-laden drones that had been launched from Iranian territory toward Erbil province were destroyed and brought down by a warplane,” the CTU said.

“No casualties or material damage were reported,” the statement added.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG)’s Interior Ministry in a later statement said this is the second time that the Kurdistan Region has been targeted by drones since the U.S.-Iran ceasefire.

“Today, Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at different times, the Kurdistan Region was attacked by four bomb-laden drones,” the statement said.

“We reaffirm our firm position that the Kurdistan Region has never been part of any war or conflict. We call for the stability of the Region and the safety of its citizens not to be targeted.”

The KRG’s Interior Ministry on April 10 also stated that various locations in the Kurdistan Region were targeted in violation of the U.S.-Iran two-week ceasefire.

“Despite the Kurdistan Regional Government’s consistent commitment to peace and stability—and its firm stance against involvement in conflict or escalation—several drone attacks targeted multiple locations across the Kurdistan Region on the night of Thursday, 9 April 2026, even after a ceasefire had been declared in the region,” the Ministry said.

The attacks, however, were successfully intercepted and neutralised.

“At a time when the people of the Kurdistan Region were expecting a return to normality, it is deeply unfortunate that terrorist elements and malicious actors, unable to tolerate the country’s peace and progress, continue to provoke instability,” the statement added.

On April 8, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani thanked all those who supported and helped to protect the Kurdistan Region after a two-week ceasefire was announced by the U.S.

“The attacks on Kurdistan were never justified,” he posted on X. “I hope all attacks on civilians, the Peshmerga, critical infrastructure and diplomatic missions will now end.”

He also underlined that he hopes that the “ceasefire between the United States and Iran will hold, paving the way for lasting stability and peace in the region.”
