PM Barzani Seeks Defense Equipment as Attacks on Kurdistan Persist

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Saturday condemned ongoing drone attacks on the Kurdistan Region despite the April 8 U.S.-Iran ceasefire and urged international support to provide anti-drone equipment.

“We urge our international partners to provide the equipment necessary to protect Kurdistan from these ongoing threats, including our civilian and energy infrastructure,” KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani posted on X.

“We strongly condemn the ongoing drone attacks against the Kurdistan Region over the last several days. Although we have not been part of the conflict, we continue to come under attack,” he also said.“Despite the ceasefire and ongoing peace talks, these attacks have killed at least five people and injured many more, in an effort to undermine the ceasefire and further harm our region.”

KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani also renewed the call on the Iraqi federal government to take practical measures to end these attacks.

Since the regional conflict began on February 28, the total casualties resulting from over 600 attacks by Iran and Iranian-backed groups on the Kurdistan Region has risen to at least 21 people killed and dozens injured.

In a video call with U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum, KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Friday underlined the need for further assistance in protecting energy infrastructure and oil companies operating in the Kurdistan Region from terrorist attacks.

Also in February 2024, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani told NBC that the Kurdistan Region needs the capability to defend itself. At the time, the Kurdistan Region was also enduring frequent rocket and drone attacks.
