On Saturday, Kurdish football club Amedspor secured promotion to the highest Turkish football league, also known as the Super League, after finishing the season in second place after a 3-3 draw against Igdirspor, leading to mass celebrations among Kurds.
“Today, we are experiencing the great pride of achieving the championship that millions have eagerly awaited,” Amedspor posted on its official account X.
“We hope that the celebrations, which have begun everywhere, will continue with unity and enthusiasm.
“While sharing this meaningful joy, we earnestly request that behaviors that could harm anyone during the celebrations be avoided, and that the necessary sensitivity be shown, especially while driving and celebrating.”

Amedspor is based in Diyarbakir, a Kurdish city in southeastern Turkey that is widely regarded as the informal capital of the country’s Kurdish minority and is also known by its Kurdish name, Amed.
Amedspor has seen notable success in recent seasons, despite facing challenges and racist attacks. Amedspor finished at the top of the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) Second League Red Group in April 2025 and was promoted to the TFF First League.
In a post on X, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani congratulated the club on their victory.
“I warmly and sincerely congratulate Amedspor on achieving promotion to the Super League (Süper Lig). I also congratulate all supporters and fans of Amedspor on this success. We are very happy about Amedspor’s achievement and hope that they will always succeed and represent Amed in the best possible way,” President Barzani wrote.
The co-chair of Turkey’s pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party, Tuncer Bakirhan, congratulated the team on their historic success.
“The people of Amed, who filled the stands throughout the season and gave tremendous support to their team, as well as the fans who stood united for Amedspor at away matches across Turkey, are the true owners of this victory. Wherever they may live, I extend my special thanks to all supporters who have given their hearts and support to Amedspor.”
Additionally, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan congratulated the team for the first time.
“I sincerely congratulate Amedspor, which will represent our Diyarbakir in the Trendyol Super League next season, along with the entire Amedspor community and my brothers and sisters from Diyarbakir, and I wish them success,” President Erdogan wrote in a post on X.
Furthermore, the leader of the Turkish opposition Republican People’s Party Ozgur Ozel also congratulated the team.
“I congratulate Amedspor, its players, supporters, and the entire @amedskofficial community for achieving promotion to the Super League at the end of a difficult season, and I wish them continued success.”

In January, Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani received a delegation from Amedspor led by club president Nahit Eren.During the meeting, Prime Minister Barzani highlighted the important role of sports and athletes in conveying and promoting messages of peace and coexistence among peoples.
He congratulated the club and wished it continued success and further progress, reaffirming his support for the sports movement and athletes.
