On Sunday, German Kurdish footballer Deniz Undav scored one goal and two assists during Germany’s 7-1 win over World Cup debutant Curaçao in FIFA World Cup.
According to ANI news website, Undav is now in the record books after three goal contributions in Germany’s win over Curacao in their World Cup opener match.
Moreover, Undav has made history as the first player of Kurdish origin to score a goal in a World Cup match.
He celebrated the goal with his famous Kurdish dance on the pitch. The German newspaper Frankfurter Rundschau wrote that his dance was an “expression of his deep connection to his roots. But the fact that Undav performed this dance after scoring a goal for the German national team can also be seen as a sign that his identity is not at odds with playing and living football for his country of birth.”
Born in 1996 in Achim, Germany, Undav is the son of Kurdish Yezidi parents originally from Viranşehir in the Kurdish-majority province of Urfa in southeastern Turkey. He has previously faced abuse for speaking publicly about his Kurdish roots.
