On Tuesday, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received Ambassador Tom Barrack, Special Envoy of U.S. President Donald Trump for Iraq and Syrian Affairs.
“We discussed strengthening bilateral relations, recent regional developments, and the importance of continued cooperation and dialogue to promote stability and prosperity in the region,” President Nechirvan Barzani posted on X.
“I reaffirmed Iraq and the Kurdistan Region’s commitment to strong partnership with the U.S.”
“Our discussions advanced critical opportunities in energy, economics, and the path forward between Erbil and Baghdad,” Ambassador Barrack posted on X about his meetings in Erbil.
According to the Kurdistan Region Presidency readout, during the meeting, Ambassador Barrack reaffirmed his country’s strong support for Iraq’s new government. Both officials also agreed on the importance of ensuring that arms remain under state control, a reference to last month’s decision by the Iraqi state to disarm Iranian-backed armed groups.
For his part, President Nechirvan Barzani emphasized the Kurdistan Region’s support for the government of Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi and for efforts to resolve Iraq’s problems, particularly the outstanding issues between the Kurdistan Region and the federal government, on the basis of the Constitution.
They welcomed the agreement between the United States and Iran to end the war, and expressed hope that it would contribute to bringing peace and stability to the region.
Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani also hosted a joint meeting with Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Commander-in-Chief General Mazloum Abdi and Ambassador Barrack.
“We exchanged views on the latest developments in Syria and the region, emphasizing dialogue, coordination, and joint efforts to preserve stability, enhance security, and support peaceful solutions,” President Nechirvan Barzani posted on X.
The discussions focused on the implementation of the January 29 integration agreement between Damascus and the SDF.
