PM Barzani Welcomes U.S.-Iran Agreement

On Thursday, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani welcomed the signing of the agreement between the United States and Iran. 


“I hope it marks a new chapter of peace and stability in the region,” he said.


On Thursday, the White House announced that U.S. President Donald Trump had signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding at Versailles in France, following the G7 summit.Pakistan’s Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif posted on X that he had signed the Islamabad MoU as mediator.


He added that the Islamabad MOU had been signed by President Trump and Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian.


On Wednesday, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received Ambassador Tom Barrack, the U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Iraq and Syria, during which he welcomed the agreement reached between the United States and Iran aimed at ending the conflict, and expressed hope that it would contribute to peace and stability in the region.


In a report on April 25, the KRG Department of Media and Information said that, between February 28 and April 20, a total of 20 people had been killed and 123 wounded in 809 drones and missile attacks by Iran and Iranian-affiliated groups targeting the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

The KRG has repeatedly condemned attacks on the Kurdistan Region and stressed that its neutral stance reflects its commitment to avoiding involvement in any campaign aimed at widening the conflict or increasing tensions across the region.On April 8, President Masoud Barzani welcomed a ceasefire between the United States and Iran.


“We hope that this ceasefire between the United States and Iran will lead to lasting peace, and bring security and prosperity to our region, serving as a starting point for a final resolution to the conflicts that exist in our region,” President Barzani stated on X.


Despite the ceasefire, attacks on the Kurdistan Region continued.“We strongly condemn the ongoing drone attacks against the Kurdistan Region over the last several days. 


Although we have not been part of the conflict, we continue to come under attack,” KRG Prime Minister Barzani posted on X on April 18.
