On Tuesday, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani officially inaugurated the Hanging Gardens of Babylon Park in Ankawa district.
“Ankawa has always been a symbol of coexistence, and we hope this park will become a place for everyone to enjoy time together,” KRG Prime Minister Barzani posted on X.
“I am happy to see our homeland developing day by day. Together, we will try to create a more prosperous Kurdistan for our people and our visitors.”
At the beginning of the ceremony, Prime Minister Barzani toured the various sections of the park, the foundation stone of which was laid in October 2024.
Also known as the Ganatha D Babel Park, it covers an area of 60,000 square meters and includes a 415-meter elevated walkway, an artificial hill standing 6 meters high, and a 70-meter pedestrian tunnel. Nearly 25,000 trees have been planted throughout the park, while 30,000 square meters are covered with green lawns.
It also features a 700-meter jogging and sports track, a dedicated events area, and two water fountains, each covering more than 500 square meters. Among its many attractions is the tallest flagpole flying the Kurdistan flag in the world, standing 63 meters high.
The park is named after one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, which, according to historical sources, were built by the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar II for his wife Amytis, who was from Media – the homeland of the Medes, regarded as the ancestors of the Kurds.
“As its name suggests, this park symbolizes authenticity and the history of coexistence in our country. It is a multi-purpose park that will serve the residents of Ankawa and Erbil, as well as all visitors to this area. It will be a place where families and children can gather and enjoy their time together,” Prime Minister Barzani said in his speech.
“A special section of the park has also been designed for sports and exercise, helping visitors – especially young people – maintain an active and healthy lifestyle.”
