Netherlands Reopens Essential Travel to Kurdistan Region and Southern Iraq
Netherlands Reopens Essential Travel to Kurdistan Region and Southern Iraq

On Thursday, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs revised its travel advisory for Iraq back to the level that was in place before the war between the United States and Iran.

“For the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and the southern provinces, the travel advisory is largely coded orange. Travel there only if necessary. It is not safe to go there for a holiday,” the advisory stated.

According to the Embassy of the Netherlands in Baghdad, this means that essential travel is once again possible.

“Large parts of Federal Iraq,as well as the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, have shifted from red to orange, returning to the situation before the recent regional unrest. This means that essential travel is now possible,” the Embassy posted on X.

“For Dutch companies, this creates space to — with careful preparation — make necessary visits and explore opportunities in sectors such as water, agriculture, [and] infrastructure including maritime, waste management, and renewable energy,” the Embassy added. “Safety and caution remain the top priority.”

On February 28, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs raised its travel advisory for Iraq to red due to the war between Israel and Iran.

The ministry warned that military actions between the two countries had made the security situation across the Middle East unpredictable and advised Dutch citizens not to travel to Iraq under any circumstances.

The war began in late February with U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran. The conflict subsequently spread to other parts of the Middle East, including Lebanon, the Gulf states, and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

During the war, several locations in the Kurdistan Region were hit by drone attacks.

This occurred even after a ceasefire had been declared in the region in April, according to the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). The attacks killed 20 civilians and injured 123 others.

KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani welcomed the agreement between the United States and Iran on June 18.

“I welcome the signing of the agreement between the United States and Iran. I hope it marks a new chapter of peace and stability in the region,” he posted on X.
