The UK has a strong security relationship with the Kurdistan Region.
In November 2024, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) signed an agreement with the UK and Iraqi federal government to enhance border security and combat human trafficking, a deal aimed at addressing illegal migration to the UK.
The deal was signed during a three-day visit by then-Secretary of State for the Home Department Yvette Cooper to Baghdad and Erbil in late November 2024. At that time, Secretary Cooper met with Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani, KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, and other relevant officials.
In April 2025, at the invitation of the UK Interior Ministry, Rebar Ahmed, KRG Minister of Interior, participated in the Border Security Summit in London, which included ministers from over 40 countries.
