On Wednesday, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani welcomed the Turkish parliament’s approval of the Law on Strengthening National Solidarity and Social Integration, which provides limited amnesty for fighters of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

Analysts suggest the approval of the law marks a key step in the peace process between the PKK and the Turkish state aimed at ending decades of deadly violence.

“This courageous step marks an important turning point toward achieving lasting peace, tranquility, and stability in Türkiye and throughout the region,” Kurdistan Region President said in a statement.

“We have always believed that peace and dialogue are the best options, and that the era of arms and military solutions has come to an end. This law presents a great opportunity to build trust and peaceful coexistence among all components of Turkish society. Everyone should support it and work toward the success of peace.”

The Kurdish president also reiterated his appreciation and gratitude to Türkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and to all the leaders and parties that contributed to the enactment of this law. 

“As always, we reaffirm the Kurdistan Region’s full support for the success of peace and stability.”

In October 2024, far-right MHP leader Devlet Bahceli called on imprisoned PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan to address parliament and declare an end to the PKK’s armed struggle, launching a new peace process. 

Kurdish leaders in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq have expressed their support for the peace process.

“We fully support this peace process and are ready to do whatever is required,” President Masoud Barzani said during a symposium in Şırnak in November 2025.
