Iraq PM Orders Probe Into Attack on KRG PM Barzani’s Office

On Monday, Iraqi Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi ordered the formation of a committee to investigate the attack that targeted the office of Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani earlier that day.

The Iraqi Prime Minister’s office said the investigative committee will determine the sources and launch points of the attack that targeted the private office of the KRG Prime Minister Barzani and the residence of the director of the Kurdistan Region’s intelligence agency in Erbil.

He also ordered that the results of the investigation be announced to the public as soon as possible, and that all circumstances surrounding the attack and the parties behind it be revealed.

Earlier today, the Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Directorate announced that two suicide Hadid 110 drones launched from Iran had targeted the KRG Prime Minister’s private office and the residence of the Director of the Protection Agency in the Pirmam district of Erbil Governorate.

The UK, EU missions in Baghdad, and the United States have strongly condemned the attack.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry also condemned the attack, considering it a violation of the sovereignty of the Republic of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, and a breach of international law.

In a statement, the KRG Office of the Coordinator for International Advocacy condemned the attack and underlined that the continued use of missiles and drones represents a serious threat to the security of the population, the stability of institutions, and the safe functioning of the democratic process in the region.

Since February 28, the Kurdistan Region has been targeted with at least 1,000 drone and missile attacks.

The Office reaffirmed that the Kurdistan Region enjoys constitutional status within the Federal Republic of Iraq pursuant to the 2005 Constitution of Iraq, adding that respect for Iraq’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the protection of its population and institutions, must be ensured in accordance with international law and the Charter of the UN.
