For the first time, the University of Exeter in the UK will offer an online 10-week beginner level course that teaches the basics of Kurdish grammar and Kurdish vocabulary. The course will run between September 28 and November 30, 2026 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm UK time. 

Yunus Abakay, a Research Fellow at the University of Exeter, told Kurdistan Chronicle that the course is open to anyone interested in taking it, both university students and members of the public.

“This is a beginner-level course, but if there is more interest, the university may offer higher-level courses as well. This year it started at a beginner level, but depending on the interest, there might be more levels offered next term,” he said. “Those who attend the course will also receive a certificate.”

The website of the University of Exeter notes that the weekly course is open to anyone eager to explore the Kurdish language and culture and is suitable for complete beginners as well as heritage speakers with limited literacy. 

Moreover, no prior formal study of Kurdish is required and it is open to all adults over 18.

The university also has a Centre of Kurdish Studies established in 2006, which also includes a MA and PhD program and a Kurdish digital archive. Last year, the University also offered in-person Kurdish courses.
