At the opening of the Slemani Summit on Thursday, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani told reporters that the relationship between the ruling Kurdish political parties is improving over the formation of the next Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) cabinet.

“The people of Kurdistan look to the political forces and parties to resolve the issues within the Kurdistan Region through harmony, unity, and collective cooperation,” President Nechirvan Barzani said in his speech at the economic forum. “Greater political stability in Kurdistan will improve the lives and livelihoods of citizens and investors. Therefore, we must all work toward agreement and stability.”

This comes amid media reports that the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) have made progress in forming the 10th Cabinet of the KRG.

“We hope this will also lead to a good outcome, and I thank all sides very much and welcome them,” President Nechirvan Barzani told reporters.

The most recent Kurdistan Region parliamentary election was held on October 20, 2024, with the KDP leading with 39 seats, followed by the PUK with 23 seats, and the New Generation Movement with 15.

“As for the formation of the government, I cannot say when it will be formed, but I can tell you one thing: so far, we have held good meetings between the Prime Minister and his Deputy, between the security forces, and between the political bureaus of the two parties, the PUK and the KDP,” President Nechirvan Barzani concluded.

During a meeting on Monday with U.S. Ambassador Steve Fagin, Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Iraq, KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani also emphasized the importance of reactivating the Kurdistan Parliament and the formation of the new KRG cabinet.
