On Monday, President Masoud Barzanii received Mazloum Abdi, Advisor to the President of the Syrian Republic, and discussed the latest developments in Syria, including the future of Kurds in Syria.

They also discussed the path of dialogue, and efforts to resolve differences and ensure stability.

Abdi is currently in Erbil to attend the annual Middle East Research Institute (MERI) Forum.

In August, Syria’s President Ahmad al-Sharaa appointed Abdi as presidential advisor, three days after he announced the dissolution of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) as part of the January 29 agreement between the SDF and Damascus after serious fighting took place between the two.

During the MERI Forum on Monday, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani “[commended] and [congratulated] our brothers in Rojava for what they have accomplished. It was not easy for them, but they were realistic.

“They understood the situation realistically, and perhaps they could not have achieved much more than what they have accomplished.

“You cannot implement the Kurdistan Region of Iraq model in Syria,” he added. “There are many differences.”

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani was received by Syria’s President al-Sharaa in August, and underlined that President al-Sharaa has no enmity with the Kurds.

“When we landed at Damascus Airport, he welcomed us with a letter he had personally sent, written in Kurdish. The flags of Kurdistan and Iraq were displayed everywhere. He wanted to send a message. Even the menu was written in Kurdish. His intention was to say that he had no problem with the Kurds, that he wanted mutual understanding, and that he believed it was possible.”

However, he added that “we can only say that full progress has been achieved when these rights are enshrined in Syria’s permanent constitution — the rights of the Kurds and those of the other components.”
